What I ate this week: Chinese food, Berlin
I did not plan it, but! this week I visited two, completely new to me, Chinese restaurants.
Berlin is full of great places with Asian food so the more I was curious about those. Let’s go!
First stop: Prenzlauer Berg
Mayflower - Greifenhagener Str. 27, 10437 Berlin
I have never been to China, but according to my trusted sources: the food at the Mayflower is very much authentic. What we had: deep-fried mini vegetable spring rolls for a good start followed by stir-fried potato slivers with peppers & tofu with garlic in spicy Szechuan sauce. The main dishes that we ordered turned out to be massive and they came with an even bigger bowl of white rice. I was not mad tho!
About the stir-fried potato slivers with peppers - this is something to try for all potato lovers. It’s a completely new way to serve potatoes to me: the whole dish was significantly oily and the potatoes were a little bit crunchy, not fully done. A nice experience!
I would also recommend ordering tofu with garlic in spicy Szechuan sauce. As a big fan of spicy food, I was so happy with that choice.
Plus, of course, you can ask for a bottle of soy sauce and we all know that rice topped with soy sauce is a match made in heaven.
Next station: Kreuzberg
Tangs Kantine - Dieffenbachstraße 18, 10967 Berlin
This neighborhood is so pretty! Tall trees, beautiful balconies, and many great places to visit. But, the decision has been made: we want to order gong bao tofu at Tangs Kantine.
Again, the size of the dish was huge. And again-again: incredibly tasty. A great combination of flavors: spiciness from chili + pepper, roasted peanuts, and fresh veggies such as paprika or courgette. Can we also appreciate how much tofu is served for 1 person?
This could be easily my new favorite place.
