Portugal: Porto

I went to Porto, Portugal! It was my first time being there but the trip turned out to be full of cool vegan places, stray cats, and (sometimes) sunbeams. Such an amazing place for a city break.

Vegan food in Porto

  • Odete Bakery - padaria artesanal & pastelaria vegan
They offer a variety of sweet and savory bakes - all vegan & sourdough. You may find there dairy-free croissants, focaccia, toasted sandwiches, and more. It is also possible to enjoy these inside with a cup of coffee. Definitely one of my favorite vegan places in Porto. Everything’s fresh and tasty, but! I recommend getting their vegan pastel de nata or toasted sandwich with pesto, mushrooms, rocket salad, and sundried tomatoes.

  • Kind Kitchen
It is a lovely restaurant - again, 100% vegan. If you are looking for a plant-based version of the famous Porto sandwich - francesinha, this is the place. The sandwich: loaf bread, cheese, smoked tofu, sausage, tomato, mushrooms + francesinha sauce.

  • Apuro - Vegan Bar
Visit this fully vegan bar to enjoy craft beer along with organic food. Oh, and they are also pet friendly which means you can meet some new fluffy friends while you wait for your order. :)

  • O Porto dos gatos
I mean… obviously. If there’s a new cat cafe to visit, I am there. It’s a simple rule that I live by. :) But all jokes aside, this cat cafe is worth visiting. The cats are funny and cute, and they have a cat’uccino on the menu, so…

  • Ibar Praia do Aquário
A beach bar with a great view and some vegan snacks. Black olives, peanuts, pimientos de padrón. Note: do not forget to take your SPF cream with you!!! :’)

  • O Diplomata
Make your own pancake type of place. Choose the toppings, fruit, crunchy extras, and so on. It is possible to get vegan & gluten-free dough, so that’s a cool option for breakfast. I would say it was okay but no fireworks.

Some other places I found but did not visit: Vegana By Tentúgal, daTerra Baixa, Soul Food Porto, MANNA Porto, Thamel, DUH! Vegan, Em Carne Viva.

Leave Porto for a day

It is quite easy to travel outside Porto - by train or bus. Pinhão is one of the destinations for such a short 1-day trip. The views on the way there are breathtaking - Portugal is so green and pretty! That’s also a chance to find and try local red or white wine.

Stray cats

Porto is definitely a good choice for all cat lovers. Take your camera with you to photograph the biggest cuties you’ll ever meet. Remember to be respectful and do not invade their personal space. Support with a little treat - if you have the funds. :)
