Scotland: Edinburgh

I went on a solo trip to Edinburgh in March 2022. All by myself to a completely new place, additionally not feeling my best after Sri Lanka where I spent a few weeks in February (note to myself: please, do not schedule two big trips one after the other ever again). Despite all, I fell in love with Scotland so hard and can’t wait to be back. So, here is a list of all the lovely vegan places you can find there & enjoy to the fullest even when you are alone in a foreign country.

A week in Edinburgh

  • Hendersons Restaurant - 7-13 Barclay Pl, Edinburgh EH10 4HW

My order: vegan haggis with root mash, whisky tarragon cream + caramelized red onion. I was pretty determined to try vegan haggis in Edinburgh and that dish was very good.

  • Vitality & Kynd - 14 Leven St, Edinburgh EH3 9LJ

I went there twice - such a cool place! Their Scottish breakfast… show-stopping. Chocolate waffles were also nice. Thanks to them, I had a chance to try HP sauce for the very first time in my life and I’m a fan. Last but not least, I do recommend ordering a dirty chai latte as well, so so good.

  • The Baked Potato Shop - 56 Cockburn St, Edinburgh EH1 1PB

They offer loaded baked potatoes, of course, as well as many other things such as a vegan sausage roll with baked beans. Worth visiting when you’re walking around the Old Town.

  • Beetroot Sauvage - 33-41 Ratcliffe Terrace, Edinburgh EH9 1SX

A vegan cafe in Edinburgh. I visited this place for breakfast to try a croissant with tofu, avocado, and tomatoes. For me, the address was hard to find even with Google Maps so keep that in mind.

  • Maki & Ramen - a few locations to choose from

I had vegan miso ramen. But would I go there again? Well, probably not, it was okay tho.

  • Holy Cow Cafe - 34 Elder St, Edinburgh EH1 3DX

Honestly, I haven't had such good fries in a long time! The best homemade fries with burgers. You can also order your tea with vegan milk - and that is still pretty mind-blowing to me, a person from outside the UK. #teawithnomilkteam

  • Love Peace and Coffee - 59 Clerk St, Newington, Edinburgh EH8 9JQ

Let’s be real, it’s always a great experience to have a chance to eat falafel panini with salted crisps on the side for breakfast. Top coffee as well.

  • Bross Bagels - a few locations to choose from

I started my Edinburgh journey in Bross Bagels. What I ordered: vegan haggis bagel followed by fried pickles and ginger beer. Do recommend!

  • Hideout Cafe Old Town - 5 Upper Bow, Edinburgh EH1 2JN

I spent so much time there drinking coffee and reading a book. One of my favorites in Edinburgh for sure, also: I loved the music they played in the background.

  • Naked Bakery - 24a Hill St, Edinburgh EH2 3JZ

Truly did not expect it would be so hard to get a table inside without a reservation, so I needed to proceed with a takeaway. I got two cupcakes and they tasted like sugar, definitely too sweet & not in a good way, sorry.

  • Black Rabbit - 33 Brougham St, Edinburgh EH3 9JT

A great selection of vegan cakes, pastries, and other treats. Nothing more to say, it’s a cool vegan deli & coffee shop.

  • Sora Lella Vegan Roman Restaurant - 13a Brougham St, Edinburgh EH4 9JS

If you love vegan Italian food, this is the place. My order was vegan capricciosa followed by tiramisu with coffee (I seriously don’t know why I ordered coffee as it was 9 pm). All tasty, all good, not the best pizza I’ve ever had, but still something to enjoy a lot in Edinburgh.

On a side note: Scottish Highlands are so beautiful, it’s truly life-changing to see those views in person. I loved every single second of being there. If you have the budget, book a trip to Loch Ness with Haggis Adventures.
